About us

Cwiar is an independent LGBTI+ rights watchdog working to protect, promote, and advance equality for LGBTI+ people across Wales.

We exist to ensure that rights are not only promised, but realised in practice. By combining monitoring, analysis, and advocacy, we hold institutions to account and work to create a Wales where all LGBTI+ people can live safely, openly, and with dignity.

Monitor

We track laws, policies, public services, and social trends that affect LGBTI+ communities.

Analyse

We turn evidence into clear insights, identifying risks, gaps, and opportunities for progress.

Advocate

We use our findings to influence decision-makers, support campaigns, and push for meaningful change.

Inform

We provide accessible, reliable information to the public, media, and policymakers.

Why we're here

Despite progress, LGBTI+ people in Wales continue to face inequality, discrimination, and barriers to essential services. At the same time, public debate and policy can shift rapidly—sometimes putting hard-won rights at risk.

Cwiar exists to provide a consistent, evidence-based response to these challenges: shining a light on what is happening, challenging injustice, and supporting a more equal future.

We combine data, lived experience, and expert analysis to build a clear picture of the state of LGBTI+ rights in Wales. We work collaboratively where possible, and critically where necessary.  Our role is not only to highlight problems, but to contribute to solutions.

Get involved

We welcome collaboration with community groups, researchers, journalists, and policymakers who share our commitment to equality and human rights.

Whether you are seeking insight, partnership, or support, we are open to working together to strengthen LGBTI+ rights in Wales.
