NHS Wales cancels all gender-affirming surgeries

We are extremely disappointed that the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee has taken the decision to cancel hundreds of scheduled gender-affirming surgeries and surgical appointments in response to political pressure.

Trans healthcare is not a political football. It is a lifesaving necessity that allows individuals to live happier, meaningful lives. It is backed by a substantial body of evidence showing that it is safe and effective care for a serious mental health condition. It has lower regret rates than knee or hip surgeries.

The fact that the Welsh Gender Service has managed a high rate of surgical progression for its patients should be commended, not criticised. Since its founding the WGS has been nation-leading in its patient-centred, evidence-based care. Trans people in Wales have taken pride in living in a nation that puts evidence over outrage. Many trans people have moved to Wales as a result of the WGS’s reputation.

It is clear that the ‘Independent Review’ into the WGS has come as a result of political pressure. This is clearly unacceptable. Patients should not be paying the price for the actions of politicians and management.

We call on the Welsh Government to urgently intervene to ensure patient safety in the Welsh Gender Service.
