Our response to Wes Streeting’s resignation

Wes Streeting has resigned as Health Secretary following a tenure that caused significant harm to the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of LGBTI+ people across Wales.

During his time in office, we saw repeated moves away from evidence-based, patient-centred healthcare — particularly in areas affecting trans and non-binary people. Decisions that should have been guided by clinical expertise and lived experience instead appeared to prioritise political positioning, contributing to fear, uncertainty, and reduced access to vital services for some of the most vulnerable in our communities.

We therefore welcome his resignation. Leadership in health must be rooted in compassion, scientific integrity, and a commitment to equitable care for all. Someone who has demonstrated opposition to established, evidence-based approaches should not hold responsibility for shaping public health policy.

It is also clear that Wes Streeting holds ambitions for higher office. Given his track record, we are deeply concerned about what this could mean for the future of LGBTI+ rights more broadly. Progress in equality is hard-won and must be protected, not undermined.

We urge the Labour Party, and all those involved in its leadership decisions, to carefully consider the impact of elevating individuals whose positions risk rolling back vital protections. The rights, safety, and dignity of LGBTI+ people must not be treated as negotiable.

We will continue to stand firmly for inclusive, evidence-based healthcare and for a future in which every person — regardless of identity — can access the care and respect they deserve.
